I must say that I'm very disappointed to see how slow Last.FM is reacting to racists slurs on their community based music website. My girlfriend alligazm recently registered to the site and soon there after a user from Russia left messages on your profile pasting the "N" word over and over again. I'm not hyper sensitive to racism as most Americans are, but I do find that over the line.
It always makes me happy to find DJ's and Producers that are following down the same path as I am. I must admit I have it a tad more difficult than a DJ that's signed on a record label, simply due to the name recognition they of course enjoy and with that of course comes the attention needed to run a site with traffic and activity, but whatever.
When I'm not doing something music related, I usually jump into server admin / webmaster type of tasks. I don't consider myself a real pro, but after a few years of it I can at least say that I've got somewhat of a grasp on things.
I have two dedicated servers, and I host a broad array of projects, some people pay, some people barter, I consider it my development platform for all my web project and by having my own server it saves me having to go through some domain provider that would surely drive me crazy in no time.
The years of experience haven't kept me from making my share of mistakes, and recently as I was doing some maintenance on this site, I managed to delet the entire home directory. I caught my mistake rather immediately but considering the power of the server it didn't take long for it to delete various essential parts of the site. Where I have backups of the databases, I hadn't gotten around to doing a full mirror of this site, since it is a few Gigs after all and that's nothing something you push around that quickly.
That was three weeks ago I think. Now, after countless hours of redoing and restructuring things, I can finally say that I'm where I wante to be.
What can I say. I've had to work since September 6th without a single day off. That meant working my regular 8h night shifts during the week, and 12h shifts on the weekend. Needless to say this rigid schedule left me very little time to concentrate on anything seriously related to music. I find that when I'm too involved with business and other items, the pressure of deadlines and other buzz kills simply don't let out the necessary creativity to start or finish a good track.
As you may know or not know, other than being a DJ and Producer, I also mettle very heavily with web development, hosting and internet marketing. In light of that, I'm constantly looking for great solutions to publish my content. From podcasts, to photo galleries, video and mp3 galleries - there is just so much great stuff out there.
I'm not the first and I'm sure I won't be the last person to express their amazement over what's possible with today's technology. So here I am, sitting at a custom built Hackintosh box with intel hardware. On top of that I've just installed Parallels, a piece of software that works very similar to VM Ware. Both pieces of software are designed to let you run Virtual Operating Systems. The use for this comes in handy in environments where you need several different types of machines and since you can make several virtual machines on one big host, it gives you the ability to take one strong machine and split it up into 8 smaller virtual machines, that can give you the flexiblity you need to run all the software you use.
Woah what a weekend. I haven't slept since Friday, sitting here recovering from a nice all day/night get together at Key Biscayne Park South of Miami. I managed to record a mix for a change but of course something had to go wrong. After the battery died at about the 3 1/2 hour mark, I replaced it quickly, turned on my mp3 recorder and hit record - not realizing I was actually writing data to an existing track which means out of the entire time I recorded, about 2 1/2 hour are there in its entirety without major screw ups.
